Area of Irregular Shapes

Today, we started off with our number of the day, and then we talked about finding the area of irregular shapes. Some strategies included counting the actual squares one by one, breaking the irregular shape into rectangles/and squares. We quickly found out the limitations of counting the squares when I showed the kids a problem that didn’t have grid lines. We also debunked that theory when I dumped out all the color tiles I had in a basket and arranged them in a rectangle. So, we rolled with the second one. We created our own shapes and then passed the picture to our partner for them to find the area. Here are some of the examples we came up with:

I was really proud of how quickly they picked this up with the grid. On Thursday we’re going to only use measurements, no grid paper and see what happens! Fingers crossed…
