1st-4th Math Coach Constantly Searching for New Ideas
MARCH MATH MADNESS
March Math Madness is a program that the school had put together before I started this week so I have been more of an active supervisor for the kids. It’s been a really great day so far though. The kids are excited to get the problems right because when they do, they get to do some basketball related activity or some sort of fitness exercise they’ve learned this year, depending on the station they’re at. I can’t wait for next year to help develop this day even further.
My first thought, was to have competitions between numbers. I could set up brackets (like the NCAA tourney) and have students work on inequalities. These could be scaffolded to reflect developmentally appropriate inequalities ranging from single digit whole numbers to mixed numbers and fractions. I want to plan an afternoon in May or June that could be similar to this but with a different theme…suggestions are welcome!
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE ROOM
My new Hundreds chart
This is my behavior chart in my room. We add links to the chain for good days and when it reaches the floor, they get a reward!
This is my estimation station. Notice that the students not only estimate but also set error boundaries for their thinking.
Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here.”
